Who's eligible to get their method free or low cost?

Uninsured women in South Carolina are eligible for a free or low-cost method. IUDs and Implants are available to all uninsured women for free through No Drama. Self-administered methods — like the pill, patch, ring and shot — are available free or low cost to uninsured women who also have a household income at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level. Your first three-month supply of a method will be free. After that, the ongoing cost for some methods may vary, but will always be low cost.

I'm interested in an IUD, Implant or the Depo shot and think I'm eligible, what next?

You will need to schedule an in-person appointment with one of our No Drama clinics. Find a Clinic near you and use our online appointment request form to schedule an appointment. Or call toll-free 833-438-6922 and a No Drama staff member will assist you.

I'm interested in the pill, patch or vaginal ring and think I'm eligible, what next?

When you have an in-person or virtual appointment, a No Drama staff member will help you determine if you're eligible. If you think you are, we'll provide you with a free three-month supply of one of these methods. The cost of your initial virtual visit is always covered. In-person appointment costs may vary based on the clinic you visit.

To continue receiving a free or low-cost method after that, you'll need to apply for SC Medicaid's Family Planning benefits or Welvista, a medication assistance program covering multiple birth control methods. But don't worry, we can help you with that.

What am I required to bring to my appointment?

You'll need some form of identification with a photo, preferably one showing your address in South Carolina. If you have recently relocated to our state, are enrolled in a college or university here, or are a member of the military stationed here, you will need to provide proof of residency like a utility bill in addition to your photo ID.

Do I need to bring proof of eligibility to my appointment?

It helps to have supporting documentation with you at your visit, but it's not required. Documentation is required however to apply for SC Medicaid or Welvista's medication assistance program. Helpful documents include:

  • Proof of South Carolina residency (SC driver's license, photo ID with SC address, SC utility bill, etc.)
  • Proof of income for each income-earning person in your home (including wages, unemployment benefits, workers' compensation, pension, social security, disability, child support and alimony)

Where can I learn more about SC Medicaid and Welvista? Can I go ahead and apply for benefits?

Visit Welvista or SC Medicaid to learn more about these benefit programs, determine your eligibility or apply directly. Both programs provide specialists who can walk you through the process step by step. Or reach out to our No Drama Patient Advocate, Amy, at amy@nodrama.org for help.

Did you know Welvista's Medication Assistance Pharmacy offers much more than just birth control? Check out its current list of covered prescription medications that could help you with other healthcare needs.

I'm already enrolled in Medicaid or Welvista. What does that mean for me?

Great — that makes everything super easy. You've already met your eligibility requirements, so your method will be free or low cost. Simply schedule an in-person appointment with one of our No Drama clinics. Find a Clinic near you and use our online appointment request form to schedule an appointment. Or call toll-free 833-438-6922 and a No Drama staff member will assist you.

I have private health insurance. Am I eligible for a free or low-cost method through No Drama?

No Drama makes birth control available to all women in South Carolina. For insured women, methods are often free or low cost but may vary based on your individual insurance plan. If your insurance covers birth control, the cost of your appointment and the method you select are usually covered by your insurance carrier. No Drama does not cover those costs.

I thought I was eligible for a free or low-cost method, but it turns out I'm not. What next?

Don't worry — No Drama is still here for you. We make birth control available to all women in South Carolina, and many of the methods we provide are always low cost. If you're interested in federally subsidized, private health insurance, you can compare plans and apply through the Health Insurance Marketplace®.

I have questions about my eligibility. Can you help me?

Of course — we're here to help you figure it out. Reach out to Amy, our No Drama Patient Advocate, at amy@nodrama.org. She can answer your questions and even help you apply directly for SC Medicaid or connect you with the right community advocate to apply for Welvista's medication assistance program.

I thought every woman in SC was eligible for a free or low-cost method. Did that change?

No Drama is proud to have made birth control available to every woman in South Carolina for almost a decade. In fact, we’ve provided contraceptive services to more than 565,000 women since 2017 and covered the cost for all patients. While any woman in the state still qualifies to get birth control through No Drama, new budget constraints mean only uninsured women are eligible for a method free or low cost.
