Free Emergency Contraception

We’ve partnered with Julie, an emergency contraception (EC) brand, to ensure more South Carolina women have EC — for free — before they need it.

This program is designed to provide you with EC before you need it. If you need EC immediately, don’t risk delays in processing and shipping — purchase it over the counter from a local pharmacy. You can find where Julie is sold locally here. If you have questions or need assistance, our No Drama Patient Advocate, Amy, is just a call or text away at 803-467-5045.

What is Julie?

Julie is your FDA-approved progestin-only emergency contraception tablet (Levonorgestrel 1.5mg). It’s your secret weapon to prevent pregnancy before it even begins. Whether you’ve had unprotected sex or are worried your regular birth control method didn’t quite do the job, Julie has your back.

Julie is most effective when taken immediately or within 72 hours (approximately three days) after unprotected sex or birth control mishaps. Keep it on hand, ready for when you need it most. Please remember, while Julie is an excellent backup, it’s not a substitute for regular birth control. If you’re in search of a consistent birth control method, No Drama has you covered with free and low-cost options through virtual or in-person appointments. Julie will not impact your current or future fertility and is not the abortion pill.

request your free julie

Fill out the request form below. We’ll process your information swiftly and your EC will be discreetly delivered to your doorstep within just five business days. Available to South Carolina residents only.

*If you need EC ASAP or are unable to wait five business days, please purchase EC from a local pharmacy or call/text the No Drama Patient Advocate at 803-467-5045.

**If any part of the mailing address you provided is incorrect, you may not receive your order.

This program is free through a generous donation from Julie and with the financial support of New Morning, which covers the shipping cost. Julie is providing access to EC through a philanthropic initiative in which Julie donates one Julie pill for each one purchased in a retail store. Because of this, Julie is available for free to South Carolina residents who are low-income, uninsured, underinsured, or may have issues getting EC on their own, while supplies last.

If you would like to support us in our effort to make birth control free and accessible for all people in South Carolina, consider donating by visiting our website.

What is the ordering process like?

Once you have completed the request form, your order will be filled, and Julie will be shipped to your provided address. To prevent any delays, it’s important that you provide the correct information the first time you fill out the request form. After receiving your order, two Julie pills will be mailed to you within five business days (excluding holidays). You will not hear from anyone unless there is an issue with your provided information.

Where can Julie be sent?

Julie can be mailed to any physical address. Julie can be sent to a student mailbox if you are a student. Unfortunately, Julie cannot be mailed to a P.O. Box.

What will the packaging look like?

The package will not say that Julie is inside. Your name will be on the package, and it will be sent to the address you provide. The package will have a return label from Sweetgrass Pharmacy.

How does Julie work?

The morning-after pill, like Julie, is 89% effective when taken within 72 hours (or 3 days) after unprotected sex. The golden rule is the sooner you take it, the better it will work.

One thing to note: Weight does impact the effectiveness of the morning-after pill. A few studies have shown that the effectiveness of the morning-after pill does decrease in people who weigh more than 165 pounds or have a body mass index (BMI) over 25. If your BMI is over 25, Julie may not be the best option for you, but there are other options if you have access to a medical provider. Ella® is another type of emergency contraception pill that works more effectively for women with a BMI under 30. Like Julie, it’s a one-time pill but it does require a prescription from your provider. Copper and hormonal IUDs are the most effective form of emergency contraceptive and are not affected by weight at all. However, they do need to be inserted by a healthcare professional up to 5 days after having unprotected sex.

How will my information be used?

Your contact information will be used to ship the Julie pills to you or to follow up if additional information is needed. Your information will not be shared or sold for any reason.

How often can I order Julie?

Once a month while supplies last.

How do I take Julie?

Refer to the insert that comes in the Julie box that tells you how best to take Julie.

I can’t wait five business days to receive my pills. What should I do?

Go to a local pharmacy and purchase EC over the counter or call/text Amy, our No Drama Patient Advocate, at 803-467-5045.

Does Julie cause an abortion?

No. The FDA clarified in December 2022 that emergency contraception (EC), including Julie, will not cause an abortion. If you are pregnant and take Julie, your pregnancy will not be impacted.

Why is this only for people in South Carolina?

No Drama is a program run by New Morning, a South Carolina nonprofit focused on improving access to birth control in its home state.

Will New Morning reimburse me if I buy EC myself?

No, the Julie promotion is available only through this program while supplies last. To receive free EC, you must request Julie through the form.
